Saint-Cast-le-Guildo and the Emerald Coast

Seven beaches, a famous coast path, and one of the finest stretches of Brittany.

A seaside town that stays open all year

Saint-Cast-le-Guildo sits in the Côtes-d'Armor, between the Baie de la Fresnaye and the Arguenon estuary. It has seven beaches, an 800-berth marina, a weekly market, shops that stay open out of season, and a golf course. This is not a resort that shuts in September: it is a working seaside village, which makes a real difference if you come in April or November.

La Grande Plage, which begins at the foot of the residence, runs for more than two kilometres of fine sand. It is lifeguarded in season and faces south-east, so it is sheltered from the prevailing wind. The tide goes a long way out, leaving a vast expanse of sand and rock pools to explore.

The GR34, at the foot of the building

The old customs path runs right past the residence. Head west and it climbs to the Pointe de Saint-Cast and its signal station, then on towards the Baie de la Fresnaye, Fort la Latte and Cap Fréhel — one of the finest stretches of the entire GR34, and one of the most manageable with children for its first few kilometres. Head east and it drops down to Pen Guen beach and the Arguenon estuary.

Everything within reach

The market, the oysters and the rest

Saint-Cast market is held on the town square, about ten minutes on foot. The days vary with the season — several mornings a week in summer, fewer out of season; the tourist office will give you the exact calendar when you arrive. You will find local growers, salted butter, galettes and, in season, oysters from the Baie de la Fresnaye — which you can open in the apartment kitchen, since the knife is provided.

For wet days there is the sailing centre, the swimming pool, a cinema a few minutes' drive away, and above all the towns of Dinan and Saint-Malo, where you can spend a whole day without being rained on for more than three minutes at a stretch.
